A wider perspective would be that the pro-life movement was never actually valid... and is running its course as a political manipulation tool. It's a cultural skin being shed, not an alternative form of thought.

+1 with Aaron on this.
I just saw a stat somewhere that 70% of Americans support Roe v. Wade now. It was never about "life," it was about sex. And yet another "social" issue that the GOP put front and center when we have far more pressing issues in this country. Plus, it doesn't help when you have people against abortion... but also against birth control (um...) or the parade of fools this past year publicly demonstrating their pre-school knowledge of women's reproduction (i.e., "legitimate rape").
The GOP (or whatever party may break off from it) needs to walk away from these kind of social issues in some sort of bizarre fantasy where they're going to take us back to 1957.
Here's some social issues that will actually affect everybody: poverty, education, etc.

What we're seeing is older people die and younger people more liberal on this and many issues. And we're becoming less religious, too.
This is the essential problem for the conservative philosophy. By definition, it is slow to change. But the world changes faster than it.
The ideas of the past rarely continue into the future. Whether it's because one generation wants to rebel against the previous or new information comes to light, this is the way of life.
Homosexuals will marry and be equal in the eyes of the law (and over time almost all people), abortion will be accepted throughout, creationism will be something we want to forget existed, etc. This is the future no matter what.

More polling information for up to 2009:
http://www.aei.org/files/2013/01/17/-ab ... 105514.pdfOnly 10 percent of Americans considered having an abortion morally acceptable in 2009.

To a varying degree, everyone has a different set of morals and where those margins are.
Abortion is obviously immoral, and the support of it often has a subconscious link to the death culture that is very prominent in the west. Sure choice and ownership of ones self is central in the ideas of freedom, but so is a natural right to life which precedes property and choice.
I also dont believe this so called reversal that NBC/WaPo is portraying, its NBC and WaPo for crist sakes.
