Regarding the first poll, the pessimism is most likely due to republicans upset Obama when when this time last year they thought for sure he'd lose.

In the US we have a very high standard of living, a lot of money, and goodies galore.
So it is surprising how hooked we are on the doom and gloom. And for the most part we really aren't a happy people. I think we've become a very spoiled society.
