Gotta be flexible though. If we were ideologically locked we wouldn't be able to fight a stateless enemy at all. Our systems sure weren't designed for it.

Oh I hear ya--and you're right it's a new day.
But that doesn't mean you throw every single thing out the window because we've never seen this before. IMO. We need to step back.

Maybe the Birthers will finally lighten up when he paints his face red.

Seriously, am I the only one who sits there and thinks: how is this happening?
First with Bush, now with Obama.
It is amazing how easily we will give up our liberties and freedoms.
OMG look! There's a terrorist over there! Behind that rock!

We are able to deal with stateless enemies, technologically, legally and in every other way. I see no hindrance there, save the incessant cry "that it's never quite enough!"
We always hear that we need more and more to get less and less. Pa, wiretaps, armies, you name it. Anything goes.
We did it with far less resources, as non points out, when it was far more difficult to do.
And Indy is bang on. Obama is sitting on more power than was ever intended or wise.

Which is ironic, because all the people who screamed when Bush was given unheralded power after 9/11--where are they now?
Meaning: now that Obama has it.
I may be getting old but I seem to remember a time when going to war or putting American lives at risk was a LAST resort, not the first one.
And there was a very thought-out process about how you would do that; i.e., checks and balances.
