To play devils advocate, we can actually manufacture DNA at the molecular level, now. Not just alter it or snip it and splice it how we like. Literally whip it up from scratch. So it may not be naturally occurring at all. It may be a distinct bit of code that can be used as a treatment or even an entirely new organism.

My understanding is you can patent synthetic DNA and I'm having a hard time understanding why you shouldn't (given our patent laws of course) have that ability.
I agree against patenting actual DNA.

Imagine if we remove all the skeuomorphs from the human DNA so we can get rid of all the useless organs from the human body.
