There are a lot of poor red states that's for sure. And honestly a lot of them are former Democrats who left that party in the 80's.

By far most of the switch happened over a 20-30 year period from the 50's to the 70's..

From the Dixicrats, to LBJ's civil rights movement, to Nixon Southern strategy.. Not only did many Southern Dems voters switch to the GOP, but many Dem politicians jumped ship too... Especially in and around 1964..

That said it doesn't excuse the hypocrisy of people who are in the South who are getting entitlements from the government complaining about other people getting entitlements. As was mentioned earlier..LOOK IN THE F'ING MIRROR...
