Science education is incredibly important to maintaining the standing of the U.S's major research institutions. JPL, MIT, Cal-Tech and so on. All of which are fairly important to world science.
Several states filling the heads of several thousand kids with noise is one thing, noise that is going to really impede their grasp of the scientific method is another. School doesn't create specialists, just gives people general knowledge more than anything, but without a proper grasp of the scientific method, that persons ability to train as a scientist is essentially hobbled.
Why no teach them the world was made by a crow or the future can be predicted from the entrails of animals, if as i've heard so often, the goal is really to stop dogmatism in favour of 'just one theory' and expand the pluralistic nature of education.
