All this does is demonstrate that America's fondness for both democracy and human rights is misguided and naive. Americans seem to have this basic assumption that if we let the citizens of a country choose their leadership and government, they will choose something civil, effective and humanitarian. This has been proven WRONG time and time again. Certain countries, probably just about all the middle east, would probably have WORSE regimes if the average voter had a say. Somehow after 20 years the US is still shocked, utterly shocked, when we bestow democracy upon these primitive theocratic societies and they in turn vote for a dictator, radical cleric, kleptocrat, or a beautiful combination of all three.
