I think it should be up to individual states if they wish to pay for a publicly funded university. I know I'd rather my tax dollars go to help a university than to help some lazy ass person go grocery shopping for free at Wallyworld.

Because reality collides with unrealistic beliefs like this--that gov't shouldn't do anything but pave roads and bomb people.
A strong education system is an investment in our FUTURE, what kind of the country these people will think we have with a crappy university system is beyond me.
There's already private schools for those who want to pay for more exclusive educations.

In a global economy having 50 states each teaching their kids 50 different versions of their ideas of education and of course different ideologies, I can't think of a quicker way for us to become a 3rd world country in a generation. Not to mention the 100's of Universities who overnight would have to fold.
Not only would we fall far far behind the world, but kids educated in Fla. probably wouldn't be able to get jobs in California.

Why should the government pave roads? The free market can decide where we need paved roads and where dirt paths will suffice.

Do what? Ok, then let each state choose if they wish to fund a university and if they do, it must conform to certain criteria. Next issue?
