in our lifetimes driving will become a thing for robots to do, and it will in reality make everyone safer. complain all you like about it being a nanny, the government can withhold driver's licenses for whatever reason as it is their roads, so this will happen
i just hope i get grandfathered in and can still ride my bike

I see your point prof but I'm cool with tbis. Will have to encourage people not to rely on instruments.
Showing plane crashes that resulted from excess reliance on instruments may be effective.
And then eventually robot cars, which will be awesome

Without a heavy reliance on instruments planes would crash like drunken pelicans. So that's not the best example.
Personally, I'm not opposed to fully automated freeways, even major urban transit corridors. I'd get more reading done.
But the other 90% of roads? Let me drive. Its too much fun to give up.
There have been some pretty useful technical advances that don't make people worse drivers. Gear synchronizers. Anti-lock brakes. Power steering. Even traction control, within reason. AWD. Cruise control.
Where it comes off the rails is things like automatic transmissions, automatic parking. Rear view cameras. Automatic braking that lets you pay less attention because you think the machine will protect you, etc. Any time the driver is disconnected from the critical dynamics of maneuvering, gear ratios and compression braking, and having to actually look around and be aware of what's happening, we've got a problem.

95% of the time I am not enjoying driving, I am getting from point A to point B as quickly and comfortably as possible. For myself and most people a fully automated driving system that would allow people to talk, eat, drink, read while commuting would be ideal. I look forward to the universal automated taxi service that will develop.

I can already tell you the future. We will have fleets of car sharing programs that will supplant what we currently think of as public transportation. Most people will get around either using their own personal car, or renting one for a small far similar to taxis now. Driving will be all but illegal, as it is to dangerous to let every idiot with a car risk a crash, especially when it would disrupt our highly efficient automated roads. No doubt, there will be some luddites and freedum luvers who will insist driving is their right, and kill hundreds if not thousands a year unnecessarily. But the rest of the sane would will rejoice at the added free time they have when not behind the wheel. The roads will run more efficiently than ever, with tends of thousands of fatal car accidents a horrible relic of the past. Our economy will be stronger, and Americans will gain more leisure time. It will be glorious and I truly can't wait. I think this along with cheap natural gas will revolutionize our lives more than anything else in the next quarter century.
