As far as I can see, both acts were equally offensive, and yet the punishment for the soldier's actions apparently warranted a custodial sentence, whereas Chowderhead only has to pay a £50 fine, no doubt paid out of his weekly benefits cheque... /

Both don't have the same capacity to produce civil unrest though.

Policing is not all about consistency and fairness. It's about intervening to protect civil society.

Some islamist twat makes a fuss, no one really cares. In fact the more you go after him you more he can cry persecution and gain martyrdom points.

Some unhinged ex-squaddie desecrates a Mosque people are likely to get upset. He's unlikely to do it again sure, but here if justice is not done. At the very least you run a nuisance protest. These unfortunately cost quite a bit of money, police overtime costing a fair bit.

Thus you prosecute in a manner that minimise the greater harm.

This thread is jingoistic nonsense. Boris is right. If they let a ex-military guy get away with something like this it sends the message that the government backs xenophobic/nativist behavior. That is the far greater risk to the community because then the majority will think that attacks against the minority will be tolerated or maybe even encouraged by the government.

You are talking about two different offences though.

Burning poppies and chanting abuse is just a public order offence - which is all the EDL get charged with when they stand outside mosques doing much the same thing.

Vandalising a religious building is a different offence entirely.
