Just be careful if you're American. Best to have 2 passports. That way the one that is stamped in Cuba isn't the one shown to get back to the US. I don't know all the ins-and-outs, but can get them if anyone is interested. My SIL went a few years back. The poverty is pretty severe when you get away from tourist areas.
One interesting anecdote. When she went, she wore typical American attire (bright dress, earrings, bracelets, nice shoes, etc.). She was allowed in anywhere. But, one day, when she knew she'd be visiting family out in the sticks, she wore no jewelry or makeup, and plain clothes.
She was barred from entering many of the nicer establishments until she told them that she was American and (essentially) had money to spend. Then, she was ushered right in. Those places don't allow locals in much.
