Monopoly is all about leveraging your luck and manipulating your opponents. I generally only ever can play a max of 2 games with the same group before they realize what a divisive sociopath I am. You just gotta convince one person that the other(s) are their biggest threat and you can get them to trade you whatever you need. Of course if they're not complete chumps you have to give them something decent in return but you still have the upper hand to f**k them in the end.

My point being, that behavior is not surprising at all considering that being an obnoxious opinionated blowhard usually helps in the short term when playing monopoly.

the more privilege you have, generally, the more paranoid you are about losing it.

Parallel to that, the more privilege you have, the less likely it is that you got there without a heavy scoop of luck or influence from an unexpected 3rd party, leaving you with only one conclusion: If you lose it you will never get back there.
