Considering all of the heavy lifting would be done by the US anyways, I think Europe's participation would hinge on America's response. If the US moves, Europe will join. If not, they'll do nothing.

If Russia attacks NATO will respond. But it's hard to get NATO to declare war on Russia if there are just "pro-Russian citizens demonstrating against the government" in Eastern Europe.
Sigmund Freud defined four parts of a psyche; the id, the ego, the superego and the stratego. The Stratego being the highest form of morality and scientific thinking.
