Well, he allegedly tried to hire people to commit murders on several ocassions. He is awaiting trial for one such allegation now. He made significant sums of money off his criminal enterprise. He set up a universe in which laws don't apply and facilitated tens of thousands (likely more) felonies.
He was a very bad actor and his actions set a horrible precedent. I'm not sure life in prison was the right sentence but he wasn't a Boy Scout anymore. He didn't just host a website. He did a lot of bad things.

Freedom of speech is OK as long as it doesn't bring forth meaningful change. You're allowed to criticize the government all you want because that won't change the government.

yeah the subpoenas are absurd here.
but speech does change government all the time. large donors get their policies effectuated. that's speech.
