Off-Duty Cop Fatally Shoots Ex-Wife In Front Of Daughter

ASBURY PARK, N.J. (AP) -- A recently divorced off-duty police officer chased down and fatally shot his ex-wife on Tuesday, then put the gun to his head and held police at bay before he surrendered, authorities said.

Authorities say Neptune Township police Sgt. Phil Seidle had his 7-year-old daughter in the front seat of his vehicle while he chased after a car driven by his ex-wife, Tamara, shortly before 11:30 a.m. Authorities say moments after the chase ended, he got out and fired his .40-caliber Glock service weapon several times into her vehicle.

Police officers who happened to be in the neighborhood for an unrelated traffic accident saw the shooting unfold and took the child from her father's car. The girl apparently was not injured.

I'm waiting for the reaction of the police union. How will they handle it? She should have done what he told her? She shouldn't have 'resisted? She was so big and scary? It's her parent's faul? It's her own fault? If you are tired of going to court you don't murder your ex-wife. It's not the best way. He should be charged with first degree murder.

Can anybody explain to me why the police shouldn't have to turn their service weapons in to an armory after their shift?

That really doesn't make much sense. Do cops stop being cops after their shift ends, nope.
If this cop didn't haven't have his service weapon, he couldn't have shot his wife with another fire arm, nope.

A police officer is commissioned 24/7. Unlike other people, they cannot decline to help if they witness a crime. Therefore, an officer needs to be armed, at all times. Not to mention, that officers make a few enemies. People tend to be unhappy with being arrested. It wouldn't be good for police officers if the criminals knew they were unarmed off duty.
