Fairly plausible but not a certainty.
one concern is that the West doesn't think like the Russians do, and vice versa. For example, Russians are more likely to view economic "attacks" as war than the West (where we basically view it as part of the game / we dont' care because we own everything anyway).
Conventional war wouldn't be the end of the world for the US. Nuclear war would be a problem, but not my problem.

I also thought the breaking up of NATO discussion in the article to be interesting. What would a post-NATO world look like? Especially in Europe?

i don't see how this is like ww1 at all. NATO isn't going to go to war with russia unless russia attacks a NATO member. that's not exactly an alliance cascade like ww1 that's a pretty clear cut "do x, y happens" scenario.
also i don't see how war is likely considering NATO is entirely defensive and putin has no intention of going to war with a NATO state.

Is there any benefit anymore to being in NATO? Basically just the U.S. defending Europe at this point.
