while it ought be taught, i do remember thinking that we spent far too much time on that. i wanted to learn more about wars and political parties and we ended up talking about our feelings instead. in one school i had US history in 7th grade. we used some book, was okay. i moved from NY to RI and then had US history in 8th grade. same book, we went through a 4th of it. why? because after the revolutionary war who cares about rhode island, i presume. then for final bit of the class we skipped from 1780 to 1960 and talked about race. the f**k
that is to say, i think it is difficult to find the right balance on these subjects

We covered it...pretty much every black history month it was went over again, even in non-history classes. Which is fine. It needs to be covered.

I remember history in 10th grade. We spent quite a while on the Civil War and it was pounded into our heads that the Civil War was 100% about State's Rights and slavery was only one small part. We did spend any real time talking about slavery other than that it happened, and never did read any of the speeches such as the Cornerstone nor any of the Declaration of Secessions by the states.
Of course, I grew up and read history books on my own and was surprised to see that slavery was the actual cause. But you try telling that to Bubba here in Texas and you're going to have a fight on your hands.

Three southern states did leave the union on grounds of "State's rights".
In the Deep South, it was about the perceived threat to the institution of slavery.
Lincoln didn't prosecute the war on the grounds of ending slavery, but to keep the south from leaving.
Your version of events is just as glossed over as those screaming it was about State's rights.
