i don't mind the punishment but since we throw people in jail for so long I think calling anything that is punishable by 1 year and 1 day in jail or longer a "felony" is wrong

Why should people be banned from boring after paying their debt to society? People who have served their prison term and even been released from probation can't vote. What's the logic here?

I certainly think it's worth looking at. That, and the fact that you have to remember when we put somebody in jail for a felony, they have to put that felony on every single job application they ever fill out for the rest of their lives, which means they won't get hired, so we're really giving them more than x amount of years for their crime now, aren't we?
Our justice/prison system needs a complete reboot. It is one thing that has actually gotten bi-partisan support, in that people like Hillary and Rand Paul are amazingly on the same side on this.

The way convicts are treated is, in general, atrocious.
Upon completion of your sentence, all rights ought to be restored, in full.
In addition, the entire criminal justice system needs to be drastically revamped, and made less into a torture device for poor people, and more into an opportunity to decrease crime.

The difficulty with moving anywhere on issues like this is that politicians can't check off "tough on crime" with support for felon enfranchisement/gun ownership. Related of course is the scenario of a ex-felon killing someone with a legally purchased gun.
