How to solve it? Reunify the Koreas.

That will keep them both occupied for a while worrying about that one, because they both do everything they can to keep it from happening. Might be kicking the problem down the road I realize, and would probably make all parties up their militarization.

Imagine having a third major player in the region that's not necessarily beholden to Japan or China.

The West is really good at wars, but man nobody beefs like Asians. If total war erupts we're looking at WW2 level casualties just in China and Japan alone.

Also I think China wants to spark a regional conflict sooner rather than later. On a long term scale, war with Japan now is better than war with Japan in 15 years once Japan has tooled up a bit. China might be thinking that it's worthwhile to get the inevitable war out of the way now while Japan is still constituted of herbivores.

Also part of me thinks "f**k it. we're gonna go to war with China in the next half century anyway let's just get it over with".

Can you ever have a war between nuclear states. No way man. Just keep over-flying the man made airstrips until one of our planes is downed then render all of the five or so airstrip islands into so much sand-strewn rubble.
