Based on the quotes in the OP, I'd assume the Pope was more reaffirming that any positions he held were reflective of his views on the nature of Catholicism and faith rather than being in deference to political ideas. That doesn't mean that they're any less reflective of any particular political persuasion, just that their genesis is separate.
As a fully liberal-artsy, white, bleeding-heart, liberal, and feministy dude I still do disagree with him on a great many things, but I don't think he's exactly denouncing liberalism in any way.
