Im curious why they defend an ideology that directly contradicts their own.

Well what do you mean by defending Muslims? If you mean defending Muslims from bigotry, it's because we believe in religious freedom.

I'm not so sure progressives have any pressing ideological reason to defend religion in general, to say nothing of any particular one. Progressives doing this are probably better motivated by their more fundamental liberalism.

Liberals, as distinct from progressives, are going to be defending religion on the basis of religious freedom (as well as Freedom of [insert the usual]) being a cornerstone of their philosophy. Liberalism at its core is most concerned with the preservation of basic freedoms and liberties. This isn't compatible with tearing down a religion, a race, a gender, or what have you.

Basically, vilifying a specific religion is just stupidity. This sort of childish impulse is easily remedied by learning to read and doing so once in a while.
