We can always hold Obama's 2008 campaign up as an example of how this should be done, in a sane and decent world. The contrast between Obama's painfully polite and calm demeanor and the respect he paid out in every direction, and the sneering and arrogance of Clinton in that campaign won him that election more than anything else. He was reliably civil and courteous. He was f**k Presidential, in a really classic way that is entirely missing from the entire 2016 field of candidates. Sanders comes closest.
