what syria needs and what is realistic are simply too far apart. ideally what needs to happen is a real election, with the baathists banned from joining. and then there needs to be a massive marshall plan international rebuilding effort that empowers syrians and isn't just a money laundering scheme for corporations to do the rebuilding. on top of that, there needs to be UN peacekeepers with actual backbones during the entire process while syrian civil society rebuilds itself.
so of course this won't happen. instead assad will remain in power, the UN will send aid that will be funneled into a few rich syrians pockets, and the country will remain devastated for generations.

Not our problem. Put a big black piece of paper over that part of the map and have a beer for a job well done.

the most important thing that could be done in the region is the end of sykes-picot borders and redrawing the map. america could fix the problems created by the UK and France (and Tsarist Russia was in on it but they didn't complete the war and did not get Constantinople).
the creation an alawatistan, kurdistan, sunnistan, and shiastan out of syria and iraq (although their borders do overlap with turkey and iran as well) is the way to save the area. syria as a country shouldn't exist. it never should have existed. we don't need to save it

Maybe that's work 100 years ago but nationalism has taken some sort of root. There is q Syrian identity now. An Iraqi identity. Etc.
