Ehh...the Republicans are for the most part responsible for it. Reagan tripled it, and set us on the familiar course of *Tax Cuts! Deficits Don't Matter!*. Bush I tried to reign it in a bit, but his son blew the roof off of it. Obama at least had the excuse of a cratered economy and the resultant loss of revenues.
trump though...inexcusable. Riding high on a recovery...still manages to drive deficits as if we were at the bottom of a recession. That corporate tax cut was appreciated though, as they were able to do all those massive stock buybacks and expand overseas even more. GM pocketed the money and is shuttering plants. And half the American people are apparently saying "Thank you, sir! May I have another?" for having to cover the taxes of corporations out of their own pockets, and their descendants' pockets.
Reaganomics does not f**k work, Republicans. It never has. The GOP "warned" us about something they themselves are largely responsible for via their penchant for slashing revenue without cutting spending.
All this said....trump is a damned Democrat who's pretending to a be a Republican. so lolwtf.

Conservatives don't actually care about debt. It is just a means of bashing social programs that save the taxpayer money, money that would otherwise be spent on their friends, who also own businesses.

"Printing Money to pay off debt" was a thing he thought worked too according to Bob Woodward's book.
I'm fine with completely dissolving the office of president. We run pretty good without one.

that's the entire point of my statement: the guy in charge of everything just doesn't even give a shit literally at all, after decades of his party at least saying the exact opposite
that doesn't mean the debt issue goes away
i think the issue is that the debt was a concern for northern republicans, who are extinct in the wild. these were more liberal republicans who wanted to spend money but who were worried about the fiscal costs. southern republicans don't give a shit. they don't want government to actually function, so they take away money for it. they don't care about the debt because they don't care about the government, they care about themselves. if they did talk of the debt it was lipservice because they were trying instead to perpetuate an economy the backbone of which was low labor, which necessitated tax breaks and whatnot for businesses which in turn caused a bunch of debt and they don't give an actual shit
