Crossing the Rubicon: Declaring National Emergency

Trump is once again threatening to declare a national emergency over the border to secure funding

this is truly a Rubicon moment from which we would require a complete reestablishment of the nation as a republic if we are to ever recover

up until now, while presidents were given the power for these things they have used the power mostly to freeze assets of various enemies of the united states overseas. they have not used it to ever fund some sort of domestic policy

think about if Obama had declared a national emergency over healthcare or a national emergency over climate change. i would say BOTH of those things are bigger national emergencies than immigration ever was but all three of them are not "emergencies" that this was supposed to allow flexibility for the executive branch on. all of them are culminations of decades of policy, so it can't be an emergency. but what if he did that? what if he declared national emergency so he could use the military to seize private property? this is what Trump is proposing. this is simply grotesque. frankly i question the constitutionality of just giving the president carte blanc to do whatever he wants under 10 U.S. Code § 2808 but it was given to him. anyway, we'd still be in the civil war if Obama did what Trump is threatening

If he declares a national emergency, he needs to be immediately removed from office, using any legal means necessary. At that point I think even Republicans would have to come into the fold on this.

I look forward to the GOP dealing with a potential Dem POTUS. If this is how they wish to let Trump play the game then....game on. Climate Change? Clearly this is a national emergency! New Green Deal can be funded through the Executive branch now! Purrrrrrfection.

Frankly it's the party of Trump now so if he wants to do it he will. I think he should. Kinda want him to so that everybody can see their true colors. I'd like to watch all of conservative america support a man leveraging federal executive power to circumvent the legislative process.

Honestly, doubt this would survive the immediate and ongoing legal shitstorm. Truman tried this very stunt with the steel industry back in the 50's. Courts slapped it down.

It's a way out for trump. A way to try to save face. He can be defeated by Congress and still declare victory. At first. Then it will be the Deep State or Democrat-controlled courts or whatever.

If I'm wrong, then Galt is right, and we are well and truly f**k.

Get over yourselves and start doing something to fix the problem, instead of concocting elaborate exit strategies or delusional black-and-white ideologies. It isn't hard. Join the Democratic Party on their website. Go down to your local riding, ask to help occasionally. Done.

Honestly, sometimes I feel like I'm the only person who still believes in the Western world. Democracy, rationality, education, humility, charity, accountability, transparency. It is more within our grasp then ever, if only these f**k mopes would stop moping. At least 75% of people who talk about politics don't do anything politically at all, then they wonder why it all goes to shit.
