It's not sad at all. Again, this is a masterstroke by Trump (even if he doesn't fully appreciate it). The US has already gained quite a bit strategically simply because of his statements, and while Denmark will not sell Greenland, it's not at all out of the question that Greenland could be a US territory in the next decade. Very strong opening salvo from Trump and I actually approve of his actions here almost completely. This would be better off for everyone involved, the US, Denmark and Greenland.

if we can't build the wall we must expand. can't get the moon fast enough for trump to make his mark, so bringing greenland back under US control does seem like a good idea

Manifest destiny is a thing of the past. Today it would be viewed as racist (like about everything else), or very Hitleresque. But it worked well for us when we needed it.

ICBMs make real estate ownership a moot point. A sub can go anywhere in the ocean to strike anywhere on land. Distance is no longer a safety factor of being out of range.
