china: respect our territory! this is an internal matter!
also china: HOW DARE YOU SIGN A LAW THAT EVERY YEAR YOU NEED TO RETHINK WHETHER OR NOT HONG KONG IS SPECIAL STATUS AND NOT CHINA ALL TOGETHER
china banned american military ships from visiting Hong Kong in response to America's new law. but the law itself was pretty brilliant, since it's literally saying Hong Kong does not get special status if China is going to act like it's part of China
like in the Ukraine, we should be looking at lethal assistance for next steps

China must really be hurting. The lack of response is a loud and clear message they are struggling. Lethal assistance is a very bad idea though, HK is lost. So much FDI flows through HK though that is special status is pulled China will be badly hurt and Hong Kong ruined. We should be offering these people visas - a bright and educated populace yearning for freedom from the communist Juggernaut. Is there anyone more deserving of a place in our bountiful land?

the brits should really be offering the same considering it was their failure to begin with to get us in this situation, and the rest of the EU because they need to pick up the slack, and taiwan, because it is spiteful. would be something.
but at the same time only the very rich would be able to get out. the rest get to go under china's boot with the uyghars. they deserve freedom, but unless we are going to facilitate the mass exodus of the huddled masses yearning to be free they won't get it

We still don't have a Western consensus to confront China, and I'm deeply worried about that.
We should be making very clear, to one another and China, that any further trade deals are conditional on certain things... including the formal recognition of Taiwan, and firm compliance to the two systems, one country deal in Hong Kong. Unfortunately the British made a stupid deal, one we'll have to live with.
They'll never take that, and that's fine - we shouldn't be engaged in free trade with genocidal authoritarians. No trade deals. And if the assault on our business community and democracy continues, we should use our considerable intelligence capabilities to inflict equal economic and intellectual damage right back. No more compromises with China. They must be treated as an equal, meaning, a real threat.
I support Donald Trump's treatment of China, TBH. I hope to see it continued and made firmer and more powerful. It is the only thing that has ever made any sense about his administration and I truly hate saying that.

The Brits had Hong Kong, not us. They are the ones that set up the pathway to events happening today. Let the Queen handle it. God save the Queen.
