Hey Galt, welcome to the singularity. It isn't instantaneous and nobody serious ever thought it would be, but there is a different species waiting at the end of it.

the singularity is defined by incomprehensibly fast technological progress by AI self improving itself. of course it's a point in time

A year after being spanked and proven definitively wrong about a topic he just barely understands, Galt persists.
Anyways, yes, FB bad. Whatcha gonna do about it?

Oh, and by the way, the term wasn't coined by Vernor Virge. It was coined by John von Neumann.

you can't just take a term and say it doesn't mean that any more and then demand other people accept your bizarre ideas
the technological singularity is a point in time in which technological progress, to human understanding, infinitely occurs in finite time. if AI can double it;s own capabilities in a year, then half a year, then a quarter of a year, and so on, this will eventually create a point in time which is referred to as "the singularity". it also requires AI to exist
you're talking about something else entirely and then wanting to call it "the singularity" because you're just being a bitch

Incorrect. As has already been explained to you several times, there are several variations on the idea. The variation I am referring to, and the argument we are having, is between hard and soft takeoff singularities. This has been discussed by folks like Ramez Namm and Johnathan Hall. In fact, this discussion is probably the single most disputed part of the entire theory, so to see you talk about it as if it is settled, because some guy who didn't even invent the term said so, is to be reminded why platforms like Facebook are so damaging: because it elevates the voices of people who have no idea what they are talking about.
