If you go strictly by kills it's gotta be the bf 109. All the top German aces set their records in the Messerschmitt.

You are all hopelessly wrong. The best fighter was the de Havilland Mosquito, AKA 'The Wooden Wonder'. This plane was more than just a highly successful interceptor, night/escort fighter however, it was also an excellent light bomber, ground support and photo reconnaissance plane that could fly faster than most German interceptors tasked with shooting them down. I would suggest that it was actually the best and most versatile plane of the entire war, and is unfortunately under-rated considering its importance and performance...

I was intending to mention the mosquito in the 'top bomber aircraft of WW2' thread. I think describing it as a fighter is a bit of a reach for the same reasons you wouldn't describe the Junkers ju 87 dive bomber as a fighter aircraft.

My pick would be the P51( after adding the merlin engine ) or the P38. The rest wern't that far off the mark either. Pilot skill could allow any type to win over any of the other types.
The hardest part of doing nothing is knowing when your done.
