Maybe the Western Powers could have won. However, this wasn't worth the risk. May sound very appealing to 21st century armchair generals/ideologues but not to the folks on the ground in the 20th century....five years after the blood bath called WWII. None of the major powers had that kind of fight in them.

After the Korean War, The US tried the strategy of a full on invasion with a smaller version of China. It was called the Vietnam War.
Sigmund Freud defined four parts of a psyche; the id, the ego, the superego and the stratego. The Stratego being the highest form of morality and scientific thinking.
If guns are not outlawed, the in-laws will have guns.
