Southern leadership was stupid. Not militarily (most historians, and even Grant, agree that their military leadership was superior), but politically. They should have known that they wouldn't win. No manufacturing, no supplies, etc. But, they supplied much of the rest of the world with materials. They should have shorn-up more support from France, England, etc. Never understood why they didn't tell England, "Look, we know you are still pissed about that whole 1776 thing. How about we make you a deal. You help us defeat the Union, and you can have back the original colonies north of Virginia (ME, MA, NH, DE, VT, CT, RI, PN, NY, NJ)." Give France some parts of the Northern US that were included in the LA purchase (Dakota territory, for instance).
No way the Union would have won with Britain invading from the North, French warships blockading New England, and the South invading from the South.
But, I'm glad that the Union won. I think the CSA would be a crappy country today if we'd won. Like Northern Mexico.
