But what about the analogy of picking a fight to stop a girl being raped. You end up in hospital, the girl escapes and the bad guy doesn't get his rocks off - who won there?

You can tell somebody has lost an argument when they start making personal attacks.
It is okay to be upset that the US lost. It is not okay to try and defend the absurd opinion that it was a "military victory" when you lost more troops than in any other conflict, failed to achieve your objectives, and failed to prevent the enemy from achieving theirs. That makes literally no sense. None.
I'll be sure to pass on your thoughts to the remnants of the Soviet Union. They'll be happy to know they were militarily victorious in Afghanistan.
