As to Latins, in my part of the country they're creating a hybrid Hispanic/Scotch-Irish thing; budweiser, BBQ and motorcycles everywhere.

yeah from what i've seen here, they keep the family, the food, and the language and they assimilate into everything else.

Ive been experimenting and practicing my mexican cooking the last couple of months due to the lack of flavor found in texmex/mexican food found in and around Houston. Ill be an official Houstonian as of a week from tonight.

The obvious racial divide in Houston is bothersom, but atleast I wont be bothered with code enforcers there. Clipboards are vastly more dangerous then commoners with something to lose.

that's true. most of my experience is with puerto ricans who, for whatever reason, tend to be a huge dickholes (like the french) when it comes to their ethnicity and language. but my brothers in-laws and some of my mexican friends either don't speak spanish or their kids don't. other than the last names you wouldn't tell their family was from south of the border.

The U.S. is one of a kind and is similar to Germany and England as it is to Italy and Mexico.

The African influence on the U.S. has been huge especially since blacks never fully assimilated and are currently heavily represented in the media which broadcasts their culture. Go to Miami and there are plenty of "whites" who are culturally "blacker" than Obama whose family more recently immigrated from Africa and who was raised by whites in a primarily white society.

The Mexican influence has been huge as well in parts of the U.S. They assimilate more easily than other groups but even generations later the food, language and traditions are still there.

I do think language, speech patterns and dialect are a good way of mapping cultures.
