Lesser environmental impact with a small efficient car than with hybrids. The manufacturing processes for their powertrains is filthy.
I'd not go with a 30 year old anything. Probably wouldn't even pass the sniffer. Catalyst is probably shot. Emissions controls and related equipment has improved tremendously since then.
