Israel strikes back at Palestine - closer to war?

Re read then, uebermann. I asked what resolutions the US vetoed that would have resolved the conflict, and he posted a whole laundry list of things we stopped that he thinks would have resolved the conflict, such ad a resolution requesting that Israel respect Muslim holy sites.

Slow day so I've been reading up on this. It seems one of Israel's first moves was taking out all known Hamas Fajr-5 missiles. These are the only missiles capable of reaching tel aviv with any degree of accuracy.

Now it's possible this was merely to prevent retaliation should the current skirmishes grow into pitched warfare.

It's also possible this was to prevent retaliation by Iran through Hamas for an Israel raid of Iranian nuke sites.

My main concern is whether this would drag the US into war. Israel was surprisingly mute in the lead up to the US election, whereas I thought Israel would have tried to force obamas hand on Iran by bombing in the months leading up to the election. The fact that they didn't makes me wonder if Obama cut a deal with Netanyahu agreeing to support such a raid after the election.

Weird though. The last time things heated up like this was right after the 08 election.

Probably more a coincidence then. I don't think Israel has faced a threat they can't handle on their own in some time. And frankly Iran would have a small edge in open warfare unless Big Brother stepped in.

Israel just called up 75,000 reservists in preparation for a ground invasion in response to over 100 rockets shot into Southern Israel over the last 24 hours.
