not really. republicans are all for military might being used on outsiders, not on citizens. the militarization of the police shows how much republicans and right wingers are right to say we need heavy amounts of arms to protect us from an abusive government. while republicans championed it at the time this forfeiture law was implemented, republicans are also the ones who keep on introducing bills to fix what was broken. sadly they don't go far enough even if it was passed.
in conjunction with plea bargaining the executive branch from federal on down has way too much power. even if the law says they can't get the money seized until the person whose money was seized is found "guilty": the police can still be motivated to make that happen for financial reward. working with prosecutors who don't bribe people with 5 dollars or anything improper like that but tell them they can get probation instead of the death penalty if they just implicate their buddy... the whole f**k system needs to be redone. the entire idea of forfeiture going to local and state police forces needs to be scrapped entirely, even if the person is found guilty. i'd rather the money be burned in a bonfire.
