Fact (from nmfs.noaa.gov):
In 2011/2012 Japan killed some 445 whales in total. This figure includes:
297 minke whales
50 Bryde's whales
2 fin whales
95 sei whales
1 sperm whale
Minke whales - not at risk.
Bryde's whales - data deficient, indicating that there is not enough information to determine extinction probabilities. In previous populations, when defined as "data deficient", the deficiency was caused by insufficient number of whales to observe, leading to a future categorization of "endangered".
Fin whales - endangered
Sei whales - endangered.
Sperm whales - endangered.
So, 34% of the whales that Japan kills are either endangered or at risk of being endangered. Who the hell came up with 5%?
