I thought it was less about privacy and more about not riling up extremists or others by showing how he looks?

Remember the old Hitchcock films? Why were they so effective? Because they never really showed you the baddy - just let you imagine it. And, you always imagined the most horrible thing.
Kind of the same thing here. Without any pics, there is nothing for terrorists to really focus on. They can say, "US killed Osama" and perhaps show a clip of DC celebrating. But, give them a picture to post at their training camps, and it will focus them more.
But, I'm really ambivalent. I don't think it would really help, nor hurt, to release them.
However, if the military and government were really serious about not letting images out, then they should have never allowed pics to be taken. Some shapeless brain matter sample (to compare DNA) would have sufficed. Not gonna get brain matter without the guy being dead, so it would confirm both that it was him, and that he was dead. But, no pics or videos allowed to be taken.
