Zimmerman? Really? This guy may have been a racist loon but nothing in that article says anything about being involved in a murder/manslaughter/legitimate self defense, whatever you want to call it.
And Paula Deen is a public figure who was already famous, this dude is nameless non-entity that works for the DHS and runs a random hate-site on the internet. I'm sure I can find reports of white people getting fired when someone found out they posted on Stormfront or something, and no outrage over that. Because they're nameless non-entities as far as public image goes.
If there's a double-standard, you certainly haven't shown it with this example.

I'm not so sure people should be getting fired from state jobs because they have unconventional political beliefs.

Paid leave = punishment? Punish me, I deserve it,lol.

Paid administrative leave is what they do while they further investigate people. They don't have enough to fire him quite yet, but still want him out of the workplace while it's being investigated so as to mitigate any damage he might do. It's not like the paid leave is his punishment and once he serves it he gets to come back as if nothing happened. In all likelihood they want time to document everything he's done before shitcanning him.

So if I work for the DHS and run a pro-marxism website in my spare time should I be fired? How about if I have a website promoting one of the two mainstream parties? Is that banned for government security employees as well?

What type of political views are "acceptable" for public servants to have? I feel if someone is good at their job what they do in their spare time is irrelevant.
