But is it the 19% who receive government money who are conservatives or the 81% who are disgusted at seeing where their money is going who are conservatives?

No politicians really believe any of the talking points. They are in for the money.

It's not that conservatives want to do away with all those things (farm subsidies, park rangers, etc.). They just think that they should be controlled at a local/state level. If a farm needs a subsidy to continue, then why can't the state provide that money instead of the Fed? I've never understood National parks - there is no provision in the Constitution allowing them. They should be state parks.
However, I do appreciate the irony of much of it. But, it's on both sides. Democrats are usually in favor of Federalism, yet want Feds to keep their government hands off their pot. Democrats generally support "green" initiatives, yet I don't see much outcry when Californians benefit from huge environmental changing projects undertaken to send them energy.
Hypocrisy is the universal political truth.

National parks are perhaps the best use for government outside of defense and justice. I just tried to look up their budget but they took the website down for the shut down. I bet they saved a bundle lol.
