Whats wrong with both parents being able to spend a lot of time with their new baby?

Yes, maternity coverage is included as an essential service. Meaning that men will be required to enter into the risk pool for the simple reason that people felt it would be discriminatory for women to be required to pay more for a service that they also might never use.

It makes total sense to me. You either force everyone to pay for maternity coverage, lowering the individual cost all around, or you force just women to have it, resulting in significantly higher premiums even though many of them will never use the service.

Or you just exclude maternity coverage as an essential service, and put the full cost of care on women because it is all their fault they got knocked up, and a man had nothing to do with it.

Exploited's explanation is correct. The problem is that this concept is so incompatible with today's Republican Party that they almost can't comprehend people openly supporting these kind of measures so every time they point this kind of stuff out they think they're finding some kind of flaw in the system due to malice or incompetence.

Every policy I've ever had, including when I was on my X's, has included maternity coverage. I can't think of anyone who doesn't have maternity coverage. Are there really policies out there that don't include maternity coverage?

So far, the whole thing is pretty much a train wreck that never even made it out of the station yet. Good intentions + bad planing = Busted duck.
