I can see why Brazil wanted the World Cup - it presents them with the opportunity to showcase 21st Century Brazil for investment and push Brazilian business - but when you are lashing out billions on sports grounds and pandering to FIFA, what was an opportunity rapidly turns into a political vanity project in the minds of the people. The fact that it is being dogged by accusations of corruption and quality concerns (the mess at the Maracana before England played there for example) will not help that.
Still, it is healthy that people are questioning it. Brits can tell them from experience that it doesn't help though, the Olympics were just the same here and the government just went ahead pouring away billions with very few actual checks on it all.
