On a more personal level, I'm regularly looked at as a crazy person for refusing to take cold medication, flu medication or painkillers for day-to-day aches and sicknesses. People think I'm gross for not washing my hands constantly ("OMG you just pulled weeds in the garden and now you're eating a sandwich without washing???!!!!"), and when I come down with something like strepthroat or bronchitis, and suffer through weeks of it before finally going to get some antibiotics, people express bewilderment.
There is no doubt that people are overmedicated. None whatsoever. When I was younger, the doctors diagnosed me with ADHD. I went on medication and became a zombie. My parents, being actual parents, decided that they'd prefer a hyper kid who was himself than a zombie kid who was well-behaved. So they took me off the medications, made drastic changes to my diet, and my problems cleared up as a got older and matured.
I was reading the other day about young kids who are having erectile dysfunction, and getting prescribed ED medication. We are talking about 20-30 year olds. The doctors won't say stuff like "Hey, stop jerking off and watching porn everyday, because it is obviously having a psychological impact on your sexual expectations and performance." Nope, they give them Viagra, when it is obvious to anyone that with some extremely rare exceptions, there is no reason on earth that a 25 year old would ever need such medication.
