That was my problem with Man of Steel. It works well with Batman, being such a dark and tragic character, with severe mental problems driving him to hurt people because it makes him feel good about himself. That's fine.
Superman is supposed to be optimistic and represent an ideal. Ya, it doesn't mesh that well with the 21st century, but it could have better straddled the border between being dark and gritty and actually uplifting a bit.
It was a very safe movie, and I kinda resented it. I thought it compromised the character too much.

Roddenberry was still alive, thats why. That damned hippy was always pouring optimistic perfume ionto his tv shows. At least it turned gritty once DS9 came out with the war.
The new Supes movie is fine, Superman remains optimistic, the change is that the US gubmint is the one who doesnt trust him in the movie.
