Dealerships are more local and involved in state politics. Unless you live in Ohio, the actual manufacturer probably has a very limited presence. Most cars are created overseas and assembled here, except for luxury domestics.
I am surprised such a battle has to be fought though. I would think Plymouth and other companies do sell directly. When have you last seen a Plymouth Prowler sold on a lot?

Not sure that's true. For example, Honda in Ohio recently invested a shit load of money to turn an auto plant into a global launch plant. They are also going to be building the Acura NSX in northern Columbus. Plus, Ford, GM, Tesla, Chrysler all design cars here.
