no one said it would be easy. and it shouldn't be easy. but children have been removed from their parents care for psychological abuse before.

that new jersey couple with the children named adolf hitler and eva braun has had their children taken. of course they specify different reasons but no one thought the children were abused or neglected until it became a national story about their names. then suddenly there were all kinds of charges made.

it's kind of like assisted suicide in hospitals. it's technically illegal. technically. but it happens quite a bit, just obviously it isn't publicized.

I can't think of a useful standard that wouldnt inherently include normative positions on parenting and other social values.

I do recall a Fundamentalist Christian family i was close with growing up sending their gay son to de-gaying camp. He eventually committed suicide. The rest of the kids were treated like people since they conformed with their parents' values, and are all doing well now (spreading fundamentalism in one form or another though. Ones a pastor I think).

The so-called "treatment" of homosexuality predicated on "curing" it is nothing short of psychological torture. The psuedo-therapists and practitioners and parents who subject children to this form of torture should be stopped. The consistent, homogeneous effects of this "therapy" are terrifically damaging and all the more so in light of all of the gay suicides. Parents should no more be able to send their children for "gay cure" psychological torture than they should be able to sign them up for water-boarding or sensory deprivation and isolation psychological torture techniques.

eynon, psychologically damaging "therapy" that results in a diminished life and, at worst, suicide, is not the object of a "silly cultural war." I just won't buy that at all. You surely wouldn't say that were parents sending their children to "therapy" that involved sensory deprivation, isolation and resulted in psychological regression. Why you would make an exception for this is quite well beyond me.

I frankly don't see the relevance in the free exercise clause. Christian Scientists are not allowed to ensure the deterioration and deaths of their children because of their religious opposition to science and medicine. The free exercise of religion clearly has its limits. In this case we are observing one of those limits.

Eynon is right. You can tell parents what they can and cannot do to their childred to a certain extent (no molestation, no abuse, etc.). But, this goes too far. If a certain instance of it escalates to the level of psychological torture, then it's illegal. But, not becasue of anything having to do with sexuality. Because it's psychological torture.
