Multiple whistleblowers tried to talk to congressional oversight committees, the Inspector General, various investigatory agencies, their superiors, etc.
They lost their jobs and reputations. One was even charged and prosecuted by the Inspector General.

As far as I am concerned I hope all of the secretive douchebaggery of the government is exposed and I don't care how. It's mainly corruption, collusion etc that they are hiding, not "national secrets".
In short, they don't want to have to explain what they are really doing to the public because they know they will be out on their ass forthwith, so they classify all of that information.
It's bullshit and cleaning this up is the first step to rational, sane governance.
