Maybe crime is down because policing has grown. I mean...New York expanded its police force and is now the safest city in the country...a giant decline in crime. Might be interesting to dump that half of the prison population doing long sentences for stupid drug offenses, and spend the tens of billions in savings on police. We're the only country in the world that spends more on prisons than on police.
On the other hand...the ballooning prison population seems to coincide with the falling crime rate....soo...eh. Double U Tee Eff, mate.

....Has policing actually grown? Are there more cops per capita now than in the 60's? (I choose the 60's because we're at about a 1960's crime rate right now.)
It is interesting that even in the face of these improvements, the people seem convinced that there is some sort of mythical crime wave going on. Probably whipped up by the 24 hour news cycle.
