Here in NY an ex-co-worker of mine just retired on July 1st at 55 Years Old. He told me if he had to get private HI NOT through his employer for him, his wife and his son, for full coverage he was quoted $1,300 a month..... Of course that is the family plan.. But for full coverage, an individual plan would be at least $500-$600.. Not an option for someone on a fixed income like SS or a pension where the person is only getting $1,300-$1,600 a month or so. Fortunately for him him, like me, he can still get his family plan HI through his employer for about $300 a month.
And that's for a 55 YO... Prices for a individual HI for a 65 YO would be in the $1,000 at least, so only a hand full of people would be able to afford it.
Saying the private HI companies would be mandated by law to offer HI to everyone over 65 YO is a pointless statement when they would be pricing their HI out of reach for a majority of 65 YO..
