I get that over tremendous time scales life adapts. Its happened before. I know. I'm more concerned with the effects it will have on our present mode of civilization. "Wait a few million years and we'll be better off" doesn't work for me as a solution to keeping us in our billions fed and housed.
The reason they look for water btw is that with our present understanding of chemistry there is no other substance with the correct properties to serve as a substrate for metabolism-related reactions. Water is a solvent carbon can work with. Compounds need to be in solution to interact with each other. We look for carbon based life because we haven't found any other basis that works with the elements we've so far discovered. Best bet is maybe silicon. At least thats what Sagan used to go on about.
